BATTLE THE BULGE! HIRE MORE ELVES!

Everyone has heard of Santa’s Elves, those tiny little helpers who make the holidays run smoothly for the big guy in the red suit. Some of us have even wished for a few of our own helper elves amid the chaotic shopping, party going and gift giving insanity of the season. Our bodies wish for the same assistance from these little elves, but the body wants help in the form of the microbes or good bacteria that assist in the break down and digestion of food.

Microbes are indeed your little elves of digestion and they are unique to you and your digestive tract. In a recent Newsweek article entitled “Bug in Your Gut” we learn more about how these friendly bacteria help in our overall health and how they relate to weight loss.

Each person is born with a unique set of microbes to assist in digestion and assimilation of food. Bacteria are necessary for digestion because they break down food into molecules small enough to be used as energy. As we digest, these tiny bacterial elves are hard at work, sifting through the food we ate, finding the nutrients we need and breaking them down into small, beautifully wrapped packages that can be delivered into the body (by a team of flying blood stream reindeer!) Essentially, Christmas Eve is occurring every time we eat and these elves are working overtime to make sure everything is packaged nicely and ready to go.

What if we don’t have enough bacterial elves working under our employ? What if the demands of our digestion aren’t being met because our bacterial elves are taking a vacation in Hawaii? Without any bacterial elves to help us digest, we end up looking more and more like the big guy in the red suit. Our tummy begins shaking like a bowl full of jelly whether we’re laughing or not. WE NEED MORE ELVES!

A study performed by a University of Washington team showed that the level of microbes we have in our bodies directly relates to our ability to use the food we ingest as energy. They found that people with more microbes (more helper elves) in their digestive tracts gained more energy from their food and were naturally slimmer than those who lack in microbe numbers. These thinner subjects get 10% of their daily calories from substances produced by their gut bugs. This means a person eating a diet of 2000 calories a day will gain 200 calories of energy from their helper-elf-gut-bug-bacteria!

SO WHAT?!
200 calories really isn’t that big a deal at first sight, but for those whose elf bacteria are on vacation or not working hard enough, it is huge! The body will store as fat any food that has not been broken down enough or wrapped prettily enough to be sent out to Santa’s sleigh. If we are lacking in bacterial elves or microbes, our food isn’t being digested and wrapped up with shiny paper and pretty bows and is being over looked at time of delivery. This unused energy is set aside in the unwanted gifts pile that strongly resembles a spare tire around the waist or those ever-popular love handles that nobody actually loves. If this lack of digestion is happening daily, then that 200 calories a day leads to 1400 calories a week -- close to 25 pounds a year of weight gain that could have been avoided!

So there you have it: without the help of our friendly bacterial elf friends, we could easily gain 25 pounds a year! But what does that mean for weight loss? If it’s that easy to gain 25 pounds, why is it so hard to lose 25 pounds? Because we don’t have enough help from our bacterial friends!
